ONCE HOMELESS, NOT HELPLESS THESE VETS BECOME ENTREPRENEURS
Hingham, MA, Feb. 1, 2008 – Many veterans wrestle with psychological and emotional issues that drive some of them to substance abuse and homelessness. But fortunately there are organizations that not only offer a helping hand, but a way towards independence.
The Winter 2008 issue of The Point, the newspaper of the Massachusetts Department of the Disabled American Veterans, brings the story of the Veteran Business Owners Initiative (VBOI), an entrepreneurial program that teaches veterans how to start and run their own businesses. More than 200 veterans have graduated from the program, directed by veteran and entrepreneur Jerry Pinsky at the Bedford (MA) VA Medical Center.
The Point is published quarterly by Donovan Writing & Publishing and sent directly to the 40,000 members of the Massachusetts DAV. The Winter issue also includes a feature article on Homes for Our Troops, a Taunton-based non-profit organization that builds custom-made homes for disabled veterans when they return from fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Disabled American Veterans is a national organization formed more than 80 years ago to help veterans of World War I. Today the organization works to improve the lives of more than 1.2 million disabled veterans and their families. The Massachusetts DAV is one of 50 state departments around the U.S., working with 81 chapters at the local level.
